EPHEMERAL HUTS AND SHELTERS:
A refuge in the heart of the lycée St Genis Pouilly!
May 2022

Created by the pupils of St Genis Pouilly’s lycée, the construction of a makeshift shelter or ephemeral refuge, was an initiative to understand the survival mechanism of displaced people or the desire of others to live alternatively.
A presentation by the UNECE (United Nations), raising the issue of the right to housing and the fight for human dignity, contributed to the pupils’ awareness of the humanitarian dimension of the project. A selection of engaged poetic works encouraged reflection of the place of man in the world and the defense of the right to a safe shelter.
The hut as a sober and fraternal habitat was presented by the geographer Mathilde Marendaz. Additionally, the pupils’ were introduced to contemporary art installations: huts as metaphors for interiority, as references to childhood, as wild and poetic shelters… Guided by the artist Jane Le Besque, the students fabricated an artistic/poetic ephemeral hut made of recycled materials embellished with texts written by the students…
